PAC Script Lab - February 1st

FILM SCRIPT READING: "Those Daring Devils"

Have you ever been betrayed by the person you are closest to? How far would you go for your best mate? This compelling screenplay tells the true tale of Keith Anderson and his best friend Sir Charles Kingsford Smith, who pledged to be the first to cross the Pacific Ocean in the 1920s.

Those Daring Devils by Lesley Elizabeth Langs will be the focus of PAC Script Lab’s first film script reading of the year, at the Subiaco Arts Centre on Wednesday February 1 at 6pm accompanied by wine and nibbles.

In what is sure to be a fun night mingling with members of WA’s film industry, Lesley will present the product of 18 years of research into the compelling human drama behind the incredible stories of Sir Charles Kingsford Smith and his flying mates.

Ever since stumbling across some old footage in an unmarked canister while helping to appraise a collection of old films that had been held in the vault of American oilman and philanthropist G. Allan Hancock, Lesley was transported back in time to the first Pacific crossing of ‘Smithy’ and his crew.

Curiosity then bought her from the USA to Australia in 1998 where she did some research in Sydney, Canberra and Alice Springs and uncovered more facts and tales..
“This is a story about two men who shared the same dream. One achieved it and in doing so made history while the other was left behind.”
Perth-born Keith Anderson and his best mate ‘Smithy’ flew for Western Australian Airways,
started a trucking company in WA and a charter flight business in NSW and even fell in love with the same woman all whilst pledging to be the first to cross the Pacific Ocean together. When Smithy leaves Anderson for a new flying partner he became rich and famous with an airport named after him, his face plastered on postage stamps and the Australian $20 note. Meanwhile Anderson was left behind. Those Daring Devils tells Anderson’s lost story of ambition, betrayal and courage set in the rip-roaring 1920s.

“I’ve always been attracted to the underdog, the little people behind those who up in history books. When I decided to base my story around Anderson, the script began to take shape,” Lesley said.

With professional actors to deliver a rehearsed reading of this script from 6pm at the Subiaco Arts Centre the public will have the opportunity to support local talent and play an active part in the script development process by giving their written feedback at the end of the reading. Drinks and nibbles will be provided at what is a great industry networking opportunity.

To reserve a place at the script reading, email pac@screenworkshop.com.au or phone 08 9384 4604.

PAC SCREEN WORKSHOPS CELEBRATE THEIR 20TH YEAR

In 1992 producer Ross Hutchens and then actor & acting coach Annie Murtagh-Monks held a first of its kind workshop in Australia which brought together screen directors and actors wishing to collaborate and understand each other’s craft better.

The idea took off and Murtagh-Monks who founded Perth Actors Collective that same year expanded them to include screenwriters and has co-ordinated these PAC Screen Workshops consistently over the past 20 years. This week, past and current participants celebrate this milestone with a party at The Byrneleigh, Nedlands on Thursday evening.

A whole generation of WA filmmakers and actors have trained with PAC Screen Workshops including acclaimed actors Emma Booth, Claire Vanderboom, Andrew Supanz, Paul Tassone, Oliver Wenn, Alfredo Malabello, Belinda Bromilow and filmmakers Elissa Down, Ben Young, Michael Bond, Martin Wilson, Stefan Radanovich, Jimmy Jack, Dan Wood, Christopher Watson, Sarah Rossetti, Henry Inglis & Aaron McCann, and awarded cinematographers Denson Baker and Dave Le May.
Alumni of the workshops have shared their thoughts on their experience:

“ PAC Screen Workshops were ideal in helping me look at the craft from different angles and reminded me to keep the fun alive.” Claire Vander Bloom Claire is an actress who has starred in Speilberg’s Pacific and in film The Square and Red Hill & Rush and is currently appearing in Hawaii Five-O.

"PAC Screen Workshops are a great way to meet like-minded film practitioners who are just as passionate as you are about making films. I met Jimmy (co-writer of The Black Balloon) in a Romance and Seduction series of PAC Screen Workshop 2. It was the beginning of that collaboration. These workshops are invaluable for those emerging in the industry." Elissa Down who wrote and directed The Black Balloon nominated for several AFI Awards and is currently working on Offspring.

"PAC Screen Workshops really helped me develop as an actor. They taught me the tools I needed to access my emotions and how to develop different characters...I'm so thankful I found out about PAC Screen Workshops when I did. Working with Annie Murtagh-Monks and Ross Hutchens was a true blessing and I would recommend PAC to anyone who is serious about getting into the film industry." Emma Booth is an international actor and winner of Best Supporting Actress at AFI Awards for Clubland and who recently completed acting a role in US feature film Parker with J-Lo, Nick Nolte and Jason Statham.

“It’s wonderful to witness the success of so many of our graduates here and overseas. These were the first workshops of their kind in the world 20 years ago and without any government funding we have helped to prepare many for work in our film & TV industry.” stated Co-ordinator of PAC Screen Workshops Annie Murtagh-Monks

For further information on PAC Screen Workshops 20th celebrations email pac@screenworkshop.com.au or phone 08 9384 4604.

PAC grads in theatre show

The Same Paige/
Janey Does Stand-up
Double Bill

14 - 18 February 2012

Two short comedies by award-winning writer Anna Bennetts feature in FRINGE WORLD comedy double bill The Same Paige and Janey Does Stand-Up as part of The Blue Room Theatre’s Summer Nights from 14 February 2012.

Paige is a writer with a vivid imagination who gets more than she bargained for when she finds herself in an absurd women’s writers group.

“I was part of an unusual women’s writers group when I lived in Bangkok. It made me think about group dynamics and how a collective insanity can take over when you put a bunch of people in a room together.” (Anna Bennetts)

After staging the short play with Pocket Theatre in 2005, Bennetts took the play to London where it had repeated success in the fringe. The Same Paige was selected out of over 100 entries to be part of Equinox Drama’s New Comedy Scene and performed in the Colourhouse Theatre, Merton Abbey Mills in 2008, and in 2009 was shortlisted out of over 500 entries in the UK Sitcom trials and performed in Leicester Square Theatre in 2009, winning the audience vote.

“From the first time we staged the play in the Swan Hotel in Freo, people said that we should film it, so getting short-listed in the Sitcom Trials got me thinking about it as a TV series. I developed a pilot episode and series outline.” (Anna Bennetts)

New York trained filmmaker Bennetts recently shot a pilot episode of The Same Paige, which is currently in post-production.

Companion piece to The Same Paige, Janey Does Stand-Up was written while Bennetts was in London and inspired by too many hours watching free-to-air TV.

Times are tough for Janey, a frightfully posh actress who’s past her prime. In the midst of London’s post-GFC pinch, perhaps it’s time to try stand-up comedy?

With fellow New York Film Academy graduate, Patrick Aguirre producing the shows, Janey Does Stand-up will be a multimedia experience that will transport you into modern day London.

Anna Bennetts won the Asia Pacific Regional Award in the BBC World Service International Radio Play competition with her play Shift in 2009 and received runner-up in the drama category of the Hope Awards for her short film Unlock in 2006.

Featuring a superb ensemble, including key members of the original Same Paige cast, Summer Williams (Paige) and Rose McKenna (Janey) who are joined by Kym Bidstrup and emerging artists Melanie Bennett, Kathy Shields and Jackson Wimhurst.

acting job

Auditions for talented young professional actors to join paid CC Performance Company
Looking for well paid, ongoing part-time acting work that offers flexible hours and leaves you free to pursue other acting opportunities at the same time? Want to join a company of fourteen dedicated actors using puppet theatre, interactive drama and film and video production to entertain and teach children in schools? If you are a professional actor, like to travel and think you have what it takes to star in this role then this opportunity may be for you.

Becoming a cast member of the CC Performance Company provides a unique opportunity to practice and develop your acting skills in a demanding children’s entertainment role – our company members need to memorize eight scripts at a time, play up to six roles per show, and sometimes perform up to five times a day! The ability to drive and a love of adventure are also important, as we often travel by small plane and 4WD to perform in very remote indigenous communities in the Pilbara, Kimberley and Central Deserts regions.

Sound interesting?

Auditions are being held on 15 and 16 December 2011 to recruit four new cast members for this unique performance company. If you are 21 or over, have graduated from a recognised acting course, have a driver’s license and think you have what it takes to shine, then contact the Constable Care Child Safety Foundation Operations Manager Dixie Francis on 9272 0011 or dixie@constablecare.org.au and we’ll get you in to show us what you can do.

The Children's Hour starring PAC graduates

When lies destroy lives: dramatic impact on stage

A MALICIOUS lie can destroy lives – witness the St Kilda schoolgirl scandal, claims Richard Gere has a bizarre sex life and the urban legend Don’t Worry, Be Happy singer Bobby McFerrin killed himself.

But it’s not just a recent phenomenon, as evidenced in a play from the Judaen Theatre Company this November.

Written in 1934 by Lillian Hellman and directed by Isaac Ellison, The Children’s Hour follows two teachers who are accused by a disgruntled student of having a lesbian relationship.

The accusation subsequently ruins the women's careers and lives.

The play is based on a historical incident in 1810, where a student alleged two teachers at an Edinburgh boarding school were having an affair and, within days, all students had been removed.

It has previously been made into two Hollywood films: These Three in 1935 and 1962's The Children's Hour with Audrey Hepburn and Shirley MacLaine.

Ellison said he has been a Lillian Hellman fan for some time and the strong, dramatic impact of the play appealed to him

“Of her many plays, this is my favourite,” he said. “The opportunity of directing an almost all-female production for the first time also appealed to me.

“This play has not been performed in Australia for a long time and we’ve reverted the setting to the mid-1930s, instead of making it modern-day as they did in 1961.

“Essentially, The Children’s Hour looks at how easily a community can almost instantly turn against people who they once held in esteem.”

Involved in performing for more than 30 years with the Judaen Theatre Company in Melbourne and Perth, Ellison has produced, directed and acted in a plethora of productions since the mid-80s.

He says his biggest challenge with The Children’s Hour is directing eight children between 12 and 14, along with the two lead actors.

“I’m dealing with a cast who are expected to bare their innermost feelings, where relationships are not always what they seem to be on the surface,” Ellison said.

“The main message is relationships are never simple and no one has the right to decry someone’s choice in a relationship simply because it is not acceptable to the general public.”

The Children’s Hour plays at 8pm, 8pm, November 24, 25, 26, December 1, 2 and 3 with a 2pm matinee November 27 at the Dolphin Theatre.

The talented cast includes Little Sparrows’ Nina Deasley, Catriona Coe, Penny Searle, Kerry Goode, Colleen Hopkins and Robert Gander and a range of young actresses aged 12 to 14.

Tickets are $27.50 and $17 concession – book through BOCS on 9484 1133 or at http://www.bocsticketing.com.au/whats-on/738/the-childrens-hour.

The Dolphin Theatre is located within the University of WA with entry from Mounts Bay Road or Hackett Drive.

PAC grads need your help to vote

Hi Annie,

At the moment Naomi Lynch and I have a potential film in the "Make My Movie" competition in New Zealand. There are over 700 film concepts competing and the winner, as decided by a combination of judges decision and public votes, wins $100,000 to finance the production of their film. We need all the help we can get and if you are able to pass along the message to people in the Perth industry to vote for our film it'd be greatly appreciated.

The link to the voting page is: http://www.makemymovie.co.nz/entry/no-mans-land/

We're doing well so far but we need to get about 1000 votes by the 10th of November to have a good chance of winning.

Thanks Annie. I look forward to catching up next time I'm back in Perth.

ARE YOU READY FOR THEATRE IN CLOSE UP?

STELLA THEATRE COMPANY presents:

‘Strip a man back to what he’ll pay for and you know exactly who he is…’

Written and directed by filmmaker and playwright Lis Hoffmann, Your Hold Upon My Heart explores the collateral damage that rips through the lives of eight tightly intertwined characters –a world where sex and love are offered and withheld, suffered and celebrated, bought and paid for.

How do Maggie and Terry, floundering in the desert of a long marriage, finally have the conversation they should have had 26 years ago? How does Sara release herself and her son from the way her husband died? How does alluring Issy right the worst wrong she’s ever done in her whole life? How does needy Pris finally resolve her constantly failing relationships? And how does Blake, selling sex on a trajectory of testosterone and emotional manipulation, finally crash into the tragedy that could defeat him?

‘Once the hook is in the heart, love pulls us into shape-or brings us undone’

Your Hold Upon My Heart was developed with the generous involvement of the Powderkeg Actors Workshop working alongside director Lis Hoffmann who wrote the final script. The play features Tina Barker, Lynda Butler, Leanne Curran, Rina Freiberg, Matt Lawrence, Lee Sheppard and Keziah Williams

Previewing on the 10th November, Your Hold Upon my Heart also signals the launch of the newly formed Stella Theatre Company. Formed by Hoffmann and Lynda Butler, the company takes up residence at the Camelot Theatre in Mosman Park, marking the first step in an ambitious five year plan that will see the company take new stories, told differently out into the urban community.

Your Hold Upon my Heart aims to bridge the gap between film and theatre, offering the audience a more intimate, raw experience .The show is performed in Stella Theatre Company’s signature style with Cabaret style seating that often brings the actors within touching distance of the audience. want to be part of an experiment?

Side Pony Productions has an incredible opportunity for theatre/artsy peeps to be involved in the current development of their new theatre production GUESS WHO. Side Pony are looking for willing participants to be test dummies in a trial of the new interactive work.

Each audience member participates in the work as one of the 24 Guess Who characters. Equipped with a headset and a mask representing their character, they enter the town; the houses, offices and streets, their boundaries laid out on the floor in tape with a few key pieces of furniture in a largely bare town hall space. Through a combination of sound track, narration, pre-recorded dialogue and the choreographed movement of the characters, the dark and sordid dealings of these characters is revealed. Each character and audience member experiences a different perspective on the events as they unfurl through individualised audio tracks.

We are asking for anyone who is interested and free for a couple of hours next Monday 7th November to contact susannah@sideponyproductions.com or call 0402 534 634 .
